Jordan Spieth made a valiant move on Friday with a 3-under 68 but finished one shot shy of the cut at 2-over total for the week, postponing his grand slam dreams another year.

Another star who missed the cut right on the number was Shane Lowry, who had entered this PGA Championship with a tie for second at the Truist Championship. The Irishman finished 1-over on the Green Mile stretch at the end, and his even par 71 left him one shot out of the weekend.

Padraig Harrington now will head to the Senior PGA Championship at Congressional next week after he also finished right on the cut line at 2-over.

The star of the last PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in 2017, Justin Thomas, will miss out on the weekend by two shots after firing rounds of 73 and 72 Thursday and Friday to finish 3-over. It just goes to show that Quail Hollow’s demands can be stern even for those with strong past experience.

Patrick Reed and Gary Woodland are also heading home early along with fan favorite Rickie Fowler who had shown good form last week in Philadelphia, but his pair of 73s leave him on the outside for this week at 4-over par. Reed had nabbed his first runner up in a major (T2) in 2017 at Quail Hollow but couldn’t get his round out of neutral on Friday morning. 2016 PGA Champ Jimmy Walker also finished at 4-over par.

Jason Day, who won at Quail Hollow on Tour in 2018, flashed fashion style but finished at 6-over par after disappointing rounds of 73 and 75. Cameron Smith struggled off the tee this week with his driver and ended up 7-over for the championship, done in by a first round 7-over 78.

Martin Kaymer played with Ryder Cup Europe captains past and present Padraig Harrington and Luke Donald, but couldn’t draft off of Donald’s surprising first round momentum as he finished at 8-over for the week. 2003 PGA Champ Shaun Micheel also ended up at that number.

Masters runner-up Justin Rose surprisingly finished at 9-over par for the championship after entering the week with a string of five straight top 13s at the PGA Championship. The Englishman joins three-time champ Brooks Koepka and two-time champ Phil Mickelson all on that 9-over score for their respective weeks at Quail Hollow.

Dustin Johnson finished at 12-over par and 2013 PGA Champion Jason Dufner ended up at 13-over after two days of work.
